Sports Premium 2021/22

For the academic year 2021/22, the Government has provided primary schools with a Sports Premium Fund.  This initiative has been set up to promote increased participation and competition and to widen the sporting opportunities in primary schools.  Great Dunmow Primary School has been allocated an amount of £19,610 for 2021/22.

What is the Sports Premium?

The Government continued to provide funding for the academic year of 2021/22.  This funding is being jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health and Culture and Media and Sport and sees money going directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all children.  The sport funding can only be spent on the provision of sport and PE in schools.

Purpose of the Funding

Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport but they will have to freedom to choose how they do this.  Possible uses are:-

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers of qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school clubs and holiday clubs

Great Dunmow Primary School – Sports Funding 2021/22

Our sports funding 2021/22 is used to employ a qualified Sports Coach for curriculum lessons, lunchtime sessions and after school clubs.  The Sports Coach works with teachers to support the children during PE in the afternoons and ensures that the quality of provision allows pupils to develop and excel.  Through employing a specific Sports Coach, our provision is sustainable as each teacher has been upskilled by working alongside the Coach.  This totals £14,245 per annum (as at April 22) from our sports premium budget.

We have also spent a portion of our funding on another lunchtime sports coach, who is an LSA.  The children have the opportunity of taking part in sporting activities during lunchtime, to allow them to develop and grow and to provide training for upcoming sporting events.  This totals £1,629 per annum (as at April 22) from our sports premium budget.

We have also used our funding for our swimming teacher.  Although pupils in Year 6 are required to swim 25 metres by the time they leave primary school, we provide swimming lessons to all pupils and whilst this is also funded partially by parent contributions we use the funding to top up the cost of running the pool and the teacher.  During 2021/22 this was £4,804.80.

The Impact of Sports Premium

The Governors agree that the money must be used so that all children benefit regardless of sporting ability, that staff have access to working alongside specialists and have the opportunity for training and learning, whilst opportunities are given to all children to compete in tournaments and competitions.  Our funding is used to enable our children to compete, learn and benefit from extra sports activities.  The sports coach employed has been a great asset to the children and school with the continued familiarity of the same tutor for all our sports events and in house lessons, extra time for sports competitions as well as our timetabled lessons.  The increase in clubs and engagement in sport has seen the participation rise each year, whilst the profile of PE has been raised as a result of this.

Our Sports Coach also takes after school clubs for the pupils.  In 2021-22 he took 5 after school clubs in the spring, summer and autumn terms with between 90-100 pupils in attendance.  The clubs that are run during the lunchtime are usually to practice for upcoming events, with approximately 140 pupils attending over the week.

The Sports Coach also allows the school to enter sporting competitions and in the last year he attended with pupils 23 events utilising 122 different pupils from Years 2-6.

Our LSA who also takes a variation of lunchtime activities involving a variety of sporting activities.
